Dawn

* * *

My mind raced as I tried to repeat back every word the ship spoke, but nothing happened. I looked at our enemy drawing closer as we continued to fall slowly toward the ground. My vampiric teeth elongated. If they thought they could kill us, that they could hurt Aiden again, they had no idea who they faced. I might have lost my touch of death, but they would quickly learn that I was quite adept at killing without it.

Every muscle in my body tensed as a warlock shifter jumped on the front of our ship, followed by three others. The wolves’ nails scraped at the glass-like material on the ship’s hood, but they failed to find purchase, and tumbled back to the ground.

I shifted in Aiden’s lap, wishing I had my legs beneath me, that I could easily leap from the vessel and take them by surprise if needed. The odds aren’t in our favor, but I always gamble on living.

More wolves hit the front of the ship when a deafening roar filled the air. The wolves turned and fell from the front of the ship. I looked to the side, and a chill ran over my skin.

A dragon flew straight toward us. It had black scales and was massive in size, smoke billowed from its nostrils, and I could also sense its anger. What was worse, I knew the dragon wanted to be seen, because it didn’t conceal itself with magic. What kind of dragon doesn’t care if it’s seen? Probably one that wanted us scared before it killed us.

“Uh…dragon,” I said, hitting Aiden in the chest, and trying to keep my voice from shaking.

“I saw it,” he muttered, still fooling with the controls, making the sail above us shift one way and then the other, but neither direction lifted us higher.

I glanced at it again. The dragon was still barreling toward us. Straight toward us, and we had no idea how to get out of its way.

“Aren’t you worried?” I asked, trying not to sound as scared as I felt.

“Yes. But there’s not a hell of a lot I can do if this ship doesn’t move.” He punched a button and the lights outside the craft turned on.

“Great. Maybe it’s afraid of light.”

As I spied the smoke still pouring from its nostrils, I realized this dragon was much more dangerous than the shifters. Those teeth could probably chomp right through the spaceship if he chose to.

“Who do you think it’s coming for?” I asked worriedly.

“At best? The warlocks. And that probably includes me.” His serious gaze pierced mine. “At worst? It’s just hungry. So that’s all of us.”

A second later, its shadow covered us. Enormous talons closed around our ship, and suddenly, we were pulled into the sky.

“Oh shit. I guess it just wants us.” Aiden said, and somehow that thought didn’t make me feel any better.

I pressed myself against the window to watch the wolves. Below us, the warlock shifters gave chase on land for several seconds.
